SURFCAM 3-Axis®

SURFCAM’S 3-Axis CAM system delivers efficient, reliable toolpaths on the most complex surface geometry with the highest quality surface finishes. 3-Axis high-speed machining strategies feature fast processing, minimal rapid motions, tapered tool support and excellent surface finish.

Includes the Standard CAM features

Product highlights include:

  • High-speed optimized finish strategies feature smooth, fluid toolpaths that eliminates abrupt changes in direction.
  • 3D Offset finishing provides superior surface finish regardless of the part shape.
  • Fast processing using new algorithms and multiple processors provide very short calculation times even for the most complex parts.
  • Rest Machining automatically detects uncut areas left by previous tools, so that they can be machined by using the optimal strategy.
  • Associative toolpath to model geometry that tracks changes to the model and adjusts the toolpath.
  • Steep/Shallow intelligently adjusts the toolpath style based upon the slope of the part.
  • Full gouge protection against check surfaces along with the powerful toolpath containment provides precise control over what needs to be machined and what must be avoided.
  • Unbeatable surface finishes increase productivity by reducing secondary processes and makes hard-die milling more efficient.

SURFCAM Offers All-New 3-Axis Finishing

Some of the new features included in this new version are: High-speed toolpaths, faster processing, multiple-processor support, automatic arc filtering, optimized retract, tapered tools, up-down cut control, angle limits and adaptive stepdown.

All new 3-axis finishing

To further strengthen SURFCAM’s excellent 3D machining capabilities the next major release will include enhancements to finishing capabilities most often requested by our customers. The following lists some of the major changes:

Speed -- Using multiple processors and all-new technology a significant decrease in processing time is achieved.

Productivity -- New high-speed linking reduces overall cycle time by reducing the length of rapid motion and eliminating abrupt changes in direction.

Reliability -- The latest, proven technologies and an exhaustive testing program has resulted in an overall increase in reliability.

Results -- Better surface finishes increase productivity by reducing secondary processes and make hard-die milling more efficient.

3-Axis Rest Milling

3-Axis Rest Milling

The rest machining automatically calculates the areas of the part where material remains after the running of a toolpath and generates a toolpath in these areas. There is no need to manually create boundaries. The Rest Machining can differentiate between near horizontal and near vertical corners. It then uses the best-suiting cutting strategy to machine these areas.

3D Offset Milling

3D Offset Milling

The 3D Offset passes are at a constant distance from each other along the surface of the part ensuring constant scallop height. Therefore the 3D Offset finishing provides superior surface finish regardless of the part shape. Processing time for this part is 42% faster..

3-Axis Offset Pencil

3-Axis Offset Pencil

Pencil Milling passes are used to machine the corners of the job to give an excellent finish. It is possible to make single or multiple offset pencil milling passes with 3D offset passes.

3-Axis Steep/Shallow

3-Axis Steep Shallow

3-Axis Steep/Shallow machines Steep and Shallow regions of the part as one operation by using the optimal machining strategy for each region. It also can machine only the steep or the shallow regions. This gives you the option to cut steep and shallow regions with different tools, as separate operations.

Adaptive Stepdown

Adaptive Stepdown

Where the horizontal distance between the passes is significant, Adaptive Stepdown can be used to insert extra passes and reduce the horizontal distance. It also leaves a uniform amount of material.

High-Speed Linking

High-Speed Linking

Smooth and tangential linking moves accommodate maximum speeds and feeds.

Optimized Retracts

Optimized Retracts

In SURFCAM, the retracts implementation consisted of rapid moves to the rapid plane. These moves are optimized for the part topography, as shown in the picture.

Tapered Tools

Tapered Tools

The new 3-Axis finish operations support tapered tools, among other benefits. This implies full gouge avoidance and more flexibility to machine parts featuring drafted walls or deep cavities.

Up-Down Cut Control

Up-Down Cut Control

The passes are broken into pieces such that each piece is machined downwards/upwards.

Automatic Arc Filtering

Automatic Arc Filtering

Automatic arc filtering helps to generate smaller NC files and get improved finishes. It also has the convenience of a single checkbox in the UI to turn it on.

3-Axis TRUEMill Functionality

TRUEMill is the only toolpath engine that controls the load on the tool to significantly increase productivity (in some cases two to four times faster) and extend tool life for all materials, including aluminum, steels, titanium, Inconel and other exotics. With TRUEMill, the more difficult to machine the material, the greater the competitive advantage.

Our Customers Say

The software is invaluable. It allows us to repeat very fine steps, all the while giving us precise control over where we are inside the cavity.
